TITLE OF POSITION:                       English Language Arts (ELA) Intervention Specialist

DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO:          Deputy Superintendent

CONTRACT PERIOD:                        To be determined by District- up to 200 Days- Classified Position not within the                                                                    Bargaining 

FLSA STATUS:                                  Exempt 


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education with a valid Kansas Teaching License. (Master’s Degree and/or Reading Specialist Endorsement preferred)
  • Four or more years of successful teaching experience (USD 207 preferred)
  • Experience working with students in Grades K-9.
  • Ability to organize time and resources.
  • Background/knowledge in research-based instructional strategies in ELA.
  • Demonstrated skill in working with at-risk learners.

CERTIFICATION:                             Valid Kansas Teaching Certificate



The ELA (English Language Arts) Intervention Specialist will provide support to teachers- principals- and Impact Coaches for increased student ELA support including providing research-based instructional strategies in alignment with standards-based curriculum and classroom support. This position requires a highly qualified teacher of English language arts. The goal of the intervention specialist is to ensure that buildings implement research-based ELA strategies- support classroom teachers ELA instruction- assist teachers with instruction and classroom strategies for Tiers 1 and 2 to ensure that students are able to master grade level standards and curriculum and monitor data collection/evidence strategies designed to increase student achievement in ELA.


Essential Functions:

In addition to providing ELA curriculum support to buildings- duties may include- but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the materials review/selection process for ELA curriculum.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the ELA tiered-intervention program.
  • Implement- monitor services and provide technical support to school site staff and administrators.
  • Assist in the evaluation of the grant program and collect and coordinate data to comprehensively monitor progress.
  • Plan and assist with parent involvement activities and education.
  • Execute and prepare forms- records- and reports as may be called for in the management of the grant program.
  • Participate in staff development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Curriculum Instructional Specialists in the development of support materials.
  • Regular attendance at work.

  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time

  • Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms- outdoors and on the telephone
  • Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height
  • Ability to bend- stoop- sit on the floor- climb stairs- walk and reach overhead

The Fort Leavenworth School District has been a part of the educational system of the State of Kansas since 1901.  Geographically, it is composed entirely of federal property and includes Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery and the U. S. Federal Penitentiary.  The buildings, which belong to the school district, are located on land leased from the federal government.  We are a Kansas Public School System.  We do not have any connection with the Department of Defense Dependent School System.  The district provides instruction for grades K - 9 in addition to half day preschool for 4 year olds meeting current residency requirements.    The post schools operate under the provisions of Kansas State Law, applicable federal laws, and regulations of the U. S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare.

District facilities consist of four schools, and one central administration building.  The district also has a warehouse and transportation center.  All schools in the district have been extensively renovated and all life safety features upgraded.  All schools have at least the following:  auditorium, gymnasium, full service kitchen, cafeteria, technology classrooms, two computer labs, separate art and music rooms and a full service library media center.  All schools are maintained in excellent condition.
