*48 College Credit Hours or the ability to pass a State Approved Assessment within 90 days of employment.

* Acquire and maintain professional level competence, through scoring a 3 or higher on the Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment (EIPA) assessments

*High Diploma or equivalent

*Must be able to lift 50lbs.

*Respect Confidentiality

*Must have good attendance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

               The employee performing the duties of this position is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, hear, bend, stoop, and reach.  The employee may be occasionally required to manually lift, move, or carry up to 50 pounds.  The employee is required to interact with staff and meet the demands of several different people.  The employee is responsible for the work output of others.  The employee occasionally works extended hours.  Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

1.     Acquire and maintain professional level competence, through Educational Interpreters Performance Assessment (EIPA) assessment.

2.     The interpreter should collaborate with the student’s educational team to clarify his/her role as necessary throughout the year. These interpreter guidelines should be shared with team members.

3.     In consultation with the teacher, locate and review Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students assigned. All educational team members should ensure the IEP is followed; it is a legally binding document.

4.     Anticipate needs and help arrange the environment prior to special events such as assemblies, performances, or guest speakers.

5.     Work with the teacher, supervising teacher, and other service providers to determine if problems are course-related or interpreting service-related. Accommodations may be necessary.

6.     Interpret all lectures, discussions, demonstrations, announcements, and any other school-sponsored activities as accurately as possible.

7.     Interpret the student’s comments, responses, and presentations as accurately as possible.

8.     Depending on the age and prior experience of the student, inform the teacher if the student is having difficulty understanding the course content. (Older students should communicate this to the teacher themselves.)

9.     Guard against the development of inappropriate dependence within the student/interpreter

relationship. Student independence must be a priority.

10.  Interpret sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign, in the manner in which the expression is presented.

11.  Encourage the student to take responsibility to communicate and interact independently with other students and teachers as appropriate.

12.  Maintain confidentiality as required by law and the Interpreters’ Code of Ethics. Follow the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

13.  Dress in a professional and appropriate manner, preferably solid-colored clothing. Avoid wearing clothing that could be visually distracting: bright prints or distracting patterns, bright/dark fingernail polish, or excessive amounts of jewelry, (especially dangling bracelets).

14.  Remember things in the mouth are distracting. Do not chew gum.

15.  Be on time to class.

16.  Refer any parent with concerns or questions about progress or student performance to the teachers. Matters concerning placement, other support services, and so forth, should be referred to the interpreter’s supervisor or the person/teacher who leads the student’s support team.

17.  Function in a manner appropriate to the situation and strive to maintain professional standards and interpersonal relations.

18.  Educate consumers (students and staff) about working with interpreters. This may include training students, both hearing and deaf/hard-of-hearing, to work with interpreters; orientation of new interpreters to the school; and professional development for teachers and staff. 

Salary Range:               Based on assessment score

Terms of Employment:  9 months             

Evaluation Frequency:  Job performance will be evaluated a minimum of 1 times per year .
