Building Custodian-Evening Position


Purpose:             The Custodian provides a safe- attractive- comfortable- and clean environment to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.                                                                             

Reports to:          Maintenance Director- Head Custodian (where applicable) and Building Principal


Pay Rate:              Based upon experience


Terms of Employment:         12 months







Educational Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.



  • Should have basic knowledge for custodial duties
  • Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities

Functions and Responsibilities:

Universal USD 250 Classified Standards:

  • Support the philosophy and mission of USD 250 and the value of education.
  • Comply with the privacy rights of students.
  • Safeguard confidential and/or sensitive information.
  • Communicate pleasantly and effectively with all the members of the school district and community.
  • Provide excellence in customer service both internally and externally.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace to insure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Ensure that all activities conform to district- state- and federal guidelines.
  • React to change positively and productively.
  • Keep abreast of new information- innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Adhere to all district health and safety policies- including all precautions of the Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.


Specific Responsibilities:

  • Operate all equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Maintain cleanliness of building and premises (including sidewalks- driveways- and play areas) at all times.
  • Ensure that classrooms- student gathering areas- restrooms- corridors and office areas are cleaned daily according to district specifications.
  • Maintain all floor surfaces according to district specifications.
  • Maintain grounds around the building.
  • Prepare building and grounds for start of school each day according to building schedule.
  • Check emergency lights and fire extinguishers and document appropriately.
  • Ensure that all doors and windows are secured and all lights are turned off (except as necessary for safety reasons) at the close of each school day according to building schedule.
  • Report any unauthorized persons in the building to the Principal immediately.
  • Report damaged school property immediately to the Principal and the Maintenance Director.
  • Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required.
  • Maintain mechanical equipment as directed.
  • Make minor building repairs- and promptly report major repair needs to the Maintenance Director.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by building Principal or the Maintenance Director.


Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

  • Level 3 – Medium Work
    • Exerting 20 - 50 pounds of force occasionally- and/or up to 10-25 pounds of force frequently- and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.
  • Extended periods of sitting and/or standing.
  • Must be able to adapt to a fast-paced- multi-faceted work environment.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license.
  • Frequent stooping- bending- reaching- kneeling- crawling and turning.
  • Requires climbing and balancing.
  • Requires lifting- moving and carrying items up to 50 lbs.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors year-round.
  • Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
  • Must work in and around dust- fumes- and odors.
  • Communication after hours may be required to address emergency repair issues.

Unified School District 250 serves the city of Pittsburg, Kansas and the immediate rural area surrounding our community. Over 2,700 students and 500 employees work daily to provide a first-class teaching and learning environment for students pre-kindergarten through the senior year of high school. 

Our students are served in four elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and an alternative education setting. All our facilities have been renovated or newly constructed since 2001 and contain the latest equipment and technology for facilitating student inquiry and learning.
