McPherson County Special Education Cooperative has a job opening for a Behavior Consultant effective for the 2021/2022 school year.

Purpose Statement

The job of Behavior Consultant was established for the purpose(s) of effecting positive behavioral change in students; providing referrals to families and/or students; assisting in student IEP’s; advising special and regular education teachers; and ensuring that work activities comply with all relevant policies- regulations and/or procedures.

 

 

Essential Functions

  • Acts as liaison between the District- assigned students- parents- and the mental health community for the purpose of supporting individual student development goals.
  • Assists in the administration of programs and services for emotionally disturbed students- and other students with significant behavioral needs- for the purpose of ensuring program eligibility and compliance with mandated regulation
  • Assists in training and supporting District staff involved with emotionally disturbed students- and other students with significant behavioral needs- (e.g. new teacher modeling- Mandt training- legal compliance- etc.) for the purpose of enhancing programs for students and ensuring that program operations are in compliance with District- state and federal regulations.
  • Conducts workshops- training- in-service presentations- etc. in classroom management techniques and other topics for the purpose of assisting District staff in more successfully developing skills and establishing effective relationships with emotionally disturbed students and other students with significant behavioral needs.
  • Directs and evaluates behavior interventionists for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Maintains complete confidentiality and professional discretion with a variety of confidential and non-confidential activities- files and records (e.g. assessments- IEPs- checklists- FBA’s- etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities- complying with mandated requirements- and providing up-to-date information.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings- workshops and committees for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable with current professional program regulations.
  • Participates in student IEP meetings as needed and/or assigned for the purpose of assisting in establishing effective student achievement goals and conveying / receiving information.
  • Performs functional behavior assessments for the purpose of ensuring accurate student placement- developing more effective IEP objectives- and complying with mandated requirements.
  • Responds to inquiries from a wide variety of individuals (e.g. District administration- building principals- teachers- mental health professionals- parents- other school districts- state and/or federal regulatory agencies) for the purpose of gathering information- providing information- resolving conflicts and/or transferring individuals to the appropriate resource(s) for resolution.
  • Serves as a resource in developing procedures and training materials for district staff involved with emotionally disturbed students (e.g. assessments- scales- etc.) for the purpose of enhancing programs for students and ensuring that program operations are in compliance with district- state and federal regulations.
  • Supports special education staff in the development and implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans for the purpose of supporting student progress with skill development.
  • Travels to multiple work sites for the purpose of providing behavioral support services to students and staff. 

 

Other Functions

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills- Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform single- technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment; performing standard bookkeeping; preparing and maintaining accurate records; adhering to safety practices; and using pertinent software applications.

 

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math- including calculations using fractions- percentages- and/or ratios; read technical information- compose a variety of documents- and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: behavioral development concepts; age appropriate activities; safety practices and procedures; stages of child development; concepts of grammar and punctuation; and business telephone etiquette.

 

ABILITY is required to schedule activities- meetings- and/or events; gather- collate- and/or classify data; and use job-related

equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific- job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; and working with detailed information/data. Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading- guiding- and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job`s functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.

 

RESPONSIBILITY

The usual and customary methods of performing the job`s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting- carrying- pushing- and/or pulling; some stooping- kneeling- crouching- and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting- 15% walking- and 25% standing. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
