High Incidence K-9 Special Education Instructor

Brown County Kansas Special Education Interlocal #615 is accepting applications for an High Incidence K-9 Special Education Instructor.

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Kansas certification in appropriate special education area.

         

EXPERIENCE:  Classroom experience as a regular or special class teacher or ParaEducator preferred.

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:   To develop and implement an appropriate program for students identified as ECSE, LD, MR, ED, and SMD.

 

IS ACCOUNTABLE TO: The building principal and the BCK-SEI director, and ultimately to the BCK-SEI Board.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:  ParaEducator(s), where applicable.

 

MAJOR PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITY:

         SCREENING – Primarily ECSE:

  1. Participates in formal/informal screening measures as appropriate with referred students as a member of the screening team.
  2. Conducts staffings with the screening team and parents/lawful custodians to disseminate findings.
  3. Participates as a member of the Child Find Team.

         EVALUATIONS:

  1. Carry out formal and informal educational testing for referrals and staffings.
  2. Prepare informal classroom evaluation in order to plan an educational plan by use of selected tests, rating scales, teacher-made evaluations, parent and professional input, and direct observation.
  3. Make follow-up educational evaluations periodically in order to determine program success and changes needed.
  4. Participates in appropriate staffings.

         INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING AND RELATED RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Write, implement, and revise each student’s IEP according to individual needs on the basis of the results of the above evaluation.
  2. Devise methods of instruction that will best implement the student’s program.
  3. Work with and support special students in regular classroom.
  4. Participate in all related building duties and responsibilities as is expected of regular classroom staff (recess supervision, school programs, open house, etc.) and any special duties designated to the position.
  5. Actively seek and support opportunities for involvement of students in regular classes and in as many regular school activities as possible.
  6. Provide and supervise opportunities for student learning outside the classroom (field trips, track meets, etc.).
  7. Assist in curriculum adaptations revisions and collaborate with other regular and special education staff for least restrictive environment.

         REPORTS AND RECORDS:

  1. Prepare promptly or update all required documents to be handed in to the director, the state, parents, or others (report cards, cumulative records, attendance and weekly reports, IEPs, team meetings, etc.).
  2. Report student programs, including documentation of progress in IEP objectives, planning, and writing above reports.

         SUPERVISION OF PARAEDUCATORS (if applicable):

  1. Plan for activities and programs implemented by the ParaEducator.
  2. Evaluates ParaEducator according to the written evaluation form; is honest, fair and consistent; and visits with ParaEducator about evaluation.
  3. Train and inform the ParaEducator in any area necessary relating to their work.
  4. Meet state ParaEducator regulations for supervision.

         PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND SKILLS:

  1. Is well acquainted with the state plan for special education especially the section appropriate to the program.
  2. Is knowledgeable of district policy on confidentiality and the federal guidelines in this area.
  3. Has an overall understanding of the BCK-SEI and its purposes and operation, and gives it support and her/his best efforts.
  4. Is familiar with the federal guidelines for special education as stated in IDEA, individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
  5. Attends appropriate professional meetings as approved by BCK-SEI director, including inservice and preservice meetings of BCK-SEI.
  6. Follows the policies and procedures of the BCK-SEI.
  7. Practices professionalism at all times.

         PUBLIC RELATIONS:

  1. Is able to relate well with parents and convey views realistically but diplomatically.
  2. Is continually striving for positive attitudes toward special education from administrators and co-workers in the building and community.
  3. Is ready to explain the functions of the program involved at faculty meetings, parent or community groups, and various inservice groups.
  4. Assists, along with other personnel, in evaluations and future planning for BCK-SEI.
  5. Participates in BCK-SEI activities.
  6. Is able to build a high level of rapport with students and with certified and non-certified staff members both in regular and special education.

                  

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  9-month negotiated contract, including established preservice and post-service meetings and workdays.

 

SALARY:  According to salary schedule.

 

 

COLLATERAL BENEFITS:  According to the BCK-SEI board policy and negotiated policy on mileage, convention, leaves and fringe benefits.

 

EVALUATION:  Completed by the BCK-SEI in relation to job description performance responsibilities.

      MINIMUM STANDARDS OF EVALUATION:

  1. Performed during first 60 days of each semester during the first two years of employment.
  2. Conducted once during the third and fourth years of employment, after which it is performed every three years.
  3. May be conducted at any time and as often as evaluator deems necessary
  4. Supplementary evaluations performed on building policy and procedures by building principals if they so desire.
